Exodus records the central story of the Old Testament – God’s deliverance from slavery in Egypt.  Exodus 1-2 records the backstory.  Israel is flourishing in Egypt.  Yet, God’s plans for Israel to become a great nation, to be blessed, and to become a blessing for all nations (Genesis 12:1-3) is being hindered in Egypt, so He raises up a deliverer, Moses to set His people free and lead them into a good and spacious land!
