Working through John 2:1-5, this message examines why the Lord Jesus addressed His mother as "woman" and what precedent that sets for how believers are to regard her. The preacher shows from Scripture that Christ came to do the will of His Father, that Mary held no spiritual authority over the Son of God, and that every person will give an account to the Lord and to no one else. A man named Micah steals from his own mother, sets up a personal shrine filled with idols, and hires a wandering Levite to serve as his private priest, all while invoking God's name over the entire arrangement. His story is not an isolated incident but a representative snapshot of an entire nation that had drifted so far from God they no longer even called out to Him. The same tendencies are alive today in a culture that celebrates personal truth and a version of God shaped around individual preferences. God has given us clear guidelines for worship, community, and how we relate to one another, and those guidelines are not suggestions. Walking away from the body of Christ or reshaping faith around personal comfort leads to the same corruption and chaos seen in Judges 17. We are called to do things God's way, not our own, because that is where His blessing lives.
