Motivation 2 - Good Old Maslow

Listen Later

‘If your lower needs are met you can maximise your potential and achieve self-actualisation’

Continuing with the theory of motivation in this episode Julie explores Maslow's model of motivation and his hierarchy of need.

These needs spring from the depths of our common life as human beings and they may attract us to or repel us from a given group and understanding why is key to maximising our potential.

As individuals, we have to consider when we are making the changes we want within our lives the motivation which drives us. Find out more about what motivates you in this fascinating episode.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Maslow focused his work on human potential and how we fulfil that potential.
  • He claimed that humans are motivated by unsatisfied needs and that the lower needs must be met before higher needs can be satisfied.
  • They are 4 general types of needs at the lower end of the model;
Physiological
  • Safety
  • Love and belonging
    Esteem
  • These must be satisfied before a person can act unselfishly  ( self-actualise) and transcend looking outside of self.
  • When one deficiency need is met a higher need emerges when this is satisfied
  • new and still higher needs emerge.
  • psychological needs - these are the most basic needs such as food, water, air, sleep, sex and shelter when these needs are not satisfied we may feel sickness, irritation or pain and discomfort.
    • Safety needs - This is about establishing stability and consistency in a chaotic world
    • it's about a sense of security and being protected from danger.
    • Love needs - We have a desire to belong to groups where we feel loved by others.
    • We naturally pack animals and will follow a leader. If you want to stand out as a leader you have to create a community and the love need for others to want to belong to it.
    • Esteem needs – self-esteem; comes from competence or mastery of a task, gaining knowledge and giving meaning to your life, based on the mastery of the skill.
Status; We achieve this when others give us attention and appreciation.
  • Self-actualisation - is transcendence where we as individuals become mentors, coaches and trainers giving back to the world.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘Maslow I can knock out of a cocked hat’

I see it in action in business every day when someone is changing something

‘When you are in a training session and you are hungry or thirsty you will not be able to pay attention until those needs are satisfied’

‘Consider the goals you are setting and recognise if you rattle the lower levels it may become a hindrance to you in trying to achieve the higher levels’
