“A feeling of expectation and desire for a particular thing to happen.”
In this sense, the word is purely based on feelings and does not depend on any statistical chance of being fulfilled.
I hope that 2021 will be a better year than 2020. That is subjective hope. This is very far removed from “Christ Jesus our hope”, objective divine hope. The one is wishful thinking, the other a certainty based on the infallibility of God.
