President Trump diagnosed with covid-19 and later hospitalized for treatment. In reaction, global markets moved mostly lower including an initial 430 point drop for the Dow Jones Industrial Average before coming in for a closing loss of 134.  A weaker than expected September jobs report also weighed on the market. The Dow briefly moved into positive territory on rising optimism that lawmakers in Washington might still be able to approve more rescue money for the economy including help for pandemic ravaged airline industry.
