Mandy on the Mountain

Mountain Poor, Mountain Proud, and Pullin’ Up Our Big Britches

Listen Later

Growing up in Roan Mountain meant you learned early how to make something out of nothing. We didn’t have much money, but we had pride, grit, and a whole lot of heart.

In this episode, Mandy breaks down the truth about being mountain poor, mountain proud, and how Hurricane Helene reminded all of us to pull up our big britches and go back to our roots.

When Helene tore through these hills, she didn’t just tear up roads and riverbanks — she reactivated the Appalachian backbone. Neighbors helping neighbors. Kids hauling water. Women cooking on grills like the Food Network was watching. Chairsaws running before daylight.

Roan Mountain showed the world what mountain people are made of.

This episode is raw, honest, funny, and full of that Appalachian strength we’re known for.

If you were raised on these ridges, you’ll feel every word of it.
