Chevrotains, or mouse deer, are small, solitary hoofed mammals that have remained largely unchanged for 34 million years. They possess distinctive tusks used for territorial defense and inhabit South and Southeast Asia, with the water chevrotain found in Africa. Elusive and difficult to study, they hold cultural significance in local folklore, and conservation efforts focus on protecting rare species like the recently rediscovered silverback chevrotain.
