The Amazing Spiderman 2, the sequel to the reboot that nobody asked for, is a step better than it's last outing. Mainly because everything is bigger. The story is bigger, the dialogue is bigger, and the villains are bigger (mostly metaphorically). Thankfully, the writers took note on the oversaturation of villains from Sam Raimi's Spiderman 3, and went with a more "comic" approach to things. This film has just as many baddies but they're not all fighting for the most amount of screen time. Some moments, especially the intro chase scene with pre-Rhino Paul Giamatti (Sideways), had a definite comic book feel to them. Sometimes it worked, other times it hurt the film. Example: An Oscorp mad scientist played by Martin Csokas (XXX) was too wacky and belonged more in a Joel Schumacher Batman film. Like with the last film, the love story wasn't overdone but, it treaded some familiar territory. The connections with Peter Parker's past were played out well, though they could have been mostly dealt with in the previous film and a little less this time. The visual effects were one of the strongest plusses for this movie. Occasionally cartoony, the f/x were major eye candy and paid off in specific scenes.
