Welcome back to Movies at Midnight! This week, we're continuing "So Bad, It's Good" Month with our review of The Happening, directed by M. Night Shaymalan. An event of some kind is happening; a bunch of people are killing themselves for seemingly no reason. Elliot, a high school science teacher, plans on evacuating New York City with his wife Alma and friend Julian to escape the chaos. Trouble comes up when the occurrence happens in other nearby cities, and Elliot and Alma soon get split up from Julian, but agree to take care of his daughter Jess. The three of them now have to fight against the elements unless they also succumb to whatever it is that is attacking people. The Happening was released in 2008, and was a critical and commercial failure, with most people calling the film a new low for M. Night Shaymalan's career. However, over the years, the movie has gained a cult following for its unintentional humor and goofy performances from the lead actors. But does the movie deserve the so bad, it's good title?
