Publisher's Summary:
Accompanied by Holmes and Watson, Mrs. Hudson crosses the ocean to attend the wedding of her cousin's daughter. They disembark to discover that the young lady's fiancé, a pitcher for the Brooklyn Bridegrooms, stands accused of an attempt on the life of J. P. Morgan and the death of his aide. A self-declared enemy of Morgan and the robber barons, the ballplayer ran from the scene of the crime and, when captured, was found in possession of a gun with two spent cartridges - the same number and caliber as that used in the attack.
Before a wedding can be held, the unacknowledged sage of Baker Street will lead Holmes and Watson along a path of investigation, taking them from J. P. Morgan's mansion to the gambling dens of New York's Tenderloin. With the enthusiastic assistance of Samuel Clemens, the reluctant assistance of Morgan, and the cautious assistance of a leader in the African Broadway community, they will identify the financier's attacker, frustrate efforts to corrupt the game of baseball, and rescue the prospective bride and groom from would-be assassins - before returning finally to the comparative quiet of 221B Baker Street.
Members Reviews:
a great trip with Sherlock and friends
By rolling together Sherlock and American baseball - along with JP Morgan, Mark Twain, and Brooklyn - Brown delivers his fourth superb mystery for the Baker Street gang. It is creative, finely researched, richly woven, and engaging. HIs unique viewpoint on how evidence is collected and processed by this famous team is entertaining and thoughtful. Brownâs clever observations and amusing dialog among the characters remain intact for this tome. While Mrs. Hudson quietly sustains her nurturing role from a Scone-proven kitchen, classic Sherlockians may appreciate seeing how Holmes launches himself into making a significant âlogical deductionâ on his own! This is a good read and BSB fans will be happy to see it land on their reading table.
Wonderfully told adventures of legendary characters in a fascinating era!
Sheâs back and sleuthing has never been better. Mrs. Hudson and her two colleagues, Holmes and Watson set sail to carry out what appears to be a routine background investigation of a prospective bridegroom of Mrs. Hudsonâs niece, Caroline, and history unfolds before our eyes. Politics, famous folk, an apparent assassination attempt on legendary financier J.P. Morgan, and a web of intrigue follow. This fascinating tale takes us into the New York City of the Gay Nineties, accommodations at the Waldorf, dinner at Delmonicoâs, the curious inner world of baseball, plotting a jailbreak from the storied âTombsâ correctional facility, a farm that is the scene of a showdown and rescue attempt, and, of course, the mansion of J.P. Morgan himself. Dr. Watson is astonished at the widespread ownership of guns in the New World, evades introduction to the new science of phrenology, and is introduced to the phenomenon of sports gambling and some of the finer points of baseball.
