Mrs O Investigates

In January of eighteen ninety-five, an Austro-Hungarian journalist named Theodor Herzl was in Paris on assignment for the Viennese newspaper Neue Freie Presse, covering the public degradation of Captain Alfred Dreyfus. Dreyfus was a French Jewish artillery officer who had been convicted of treason on evidence that was, and remained, thin. As the ceremony proceeded — Dreyfus's rank insignia torn from his uniform, his sword broken across an officer's knee — Herzl heard the crowd outside the École Militaire chanting "death to the Jews."

Herzl walked back to his hotel that afternoon and, over the following months, began writing the pamphlet that would appear in early eighteen ninety-six under the title Der Judenstaat— The Jewish State. His argument was direct. The eighteen hundred years of European Christian and post-Christian antisemitism, which had periodically flared into pogrom and expulsion and would, in his prediction, flare into something worse before the twentieth century was out, could not be solved by Jewish assimilation into European society. It could only be solved by the establishment of a Jewish national homeland — a modern Jewish state — somewhere in the world where Jews could exercise sovereignty and be safe.

In August of eighteen ninety-seven, Herzl convened two hundred delegates in the Swiss city of Basel for what he called the First Zionist Congress. That Congress adopted a formal programme committing to establishing a Jewish national home in Palestine. Fifty-one years later, on the fourteenth of May, nineteen forty-eight, David Ben-Gurion in Tel Aviv declared the establishment of the State of Israel.

In 1909, Oxford University Press released a study Bible with margin notes that would eventually change how most English-speaking Christians worldwide read the Book of Revelation. Its editor was Cyrus Ingerson Scofield — a former Confederate soldier, disgraced U.S. District Attorney, and Saint Louis jailbird who walked out of an alcoholic collapse in 1879 and never went back. Its framework came from an Anglo-Irish clergyman named John Nelson Darby, who broke with the Church of Ireland in 1827 and spent the next fifty-five years building a system of Bible reading no historic Christian tradition had ever taught before. Together, over a single century, the two men rewired how tens of millions of Christians thought about Israel, the church, the temple, the rapture, and the end of the world.

This is the story of the man, the book, and the long shadow it threw across the twentieth-century church.

If you walk into the Roman Forum today, on any given morning of any given month, and stand at the eastern end where the Via Sacra rises out of the ancient market square toward the Palatine Hill, you will see a single small triumphal arch. Built around eighty-one A.D. by the Emperor Domitian to commemorate his brother Titus. On its inner south panel, carved in stone still visible after nineteen centuries, is a procession of Roman legionaries carrying a menorah, a table of showbread, and a set of silver trumpets away from Jerusalem.

That is the Second Temple, being carried into Rome, on the shoulders of the soldiers who burned it.

"Now as Eleazar was proceeding on in this exhortation, they all cut him off short, and made haste to do the work…"

That was Josephus. Jewish War Book seven, chapter eight. He is describing the last hours before dawn on what he tells us was the fifteenth day of the Jewish month of Xanthicus, in the year we now call 73 AD. The place was the mountain fortress of Masada, on the western shore of the Dead Sea. The people were the last organised resistance to Rome in the Jewish War. Nine hundred and sixty men, women, and children.

In the last hours of that night, according to Josephus, they killed each other. The Roman assault troops broke through the walls at dawn, expecting a battle. They walked into a fortress full of bodies.

This is the war's epilogue. The Temple has fallen. The city has fallen. And one mountain in the desert, held by fewer than a thousand people, holds out for another two and a half years against the empire that has just crushed everything else.

August, 70 AD. The day the world changed. The Second Temple — the beating heart of ancient Judaism, the building Christ Himself had stood inside and warned would not have one stone left upon another — burned to the ground in a fire the Romans, according to their own commanding general, did not order. Episode Six walks the last month of the Temple in careful detail, with Josephus, Tacitus, Sulpicius Severus, and the two communities that walked out of the ashes.

”Now, as soon as the army had no more people to slay or to plunder… Caesar gave orders that they should now demolish the entire city and temple.”

That was Josephus. Jewish War, Book Six. Written in Rome sometime in the seventies AD, paid for by the Emperor Vespasian, published under the imperial seal. Josephus was in the Roman camp when Jerusalem fell. He watched it fall. His mother was inside the walls. His brother was inside the walls. His childhood friends were inside the walls. The city he had grown up in, the Temple he had served in as a young priest, the streets he had walked as a boy — being systematically taken apart stone by stone by the army he was travelling with.

He watched it, and he wrote it down. What he wrote down is one of the most extraordinary eyewitness accounts of a national catastrophe anywhere in classical literature. He does not spare us. He does not soften it. And in the passages we read tonight, at the critical moments, he does not spare himself.
