  • 1981: Burlington's Mayoral Election

    In 1981, Bernie Sanders, with the help of community organizers around Burlington, defeated Mayor Gordon Paquette in a mayoral race that shook the city. It was the beginning of Bernie's rise in Vermont politics... one which would eventually lead him to his campaign for president. In this episode of Mudseason, we talk with Phil Fiermonte who worked alongside Bernie for most of the last 40 years.


    Phil Fiermonte served as Senator Bernie Sanders’ State Director for 20 years, was his Field Director for several statewide campaigns, was a Senior Advisor on Senator Sanders’ 2016 Presidential race, and worked as a community organizer at the King St Youth Center in the early 1980s, and as union organizer for the American Federation of Teachers.
