In which the weary traveller, disembarking at the bleak and storm-lashed Mugby Junction in the dead hours of night, finds himself solitary amidst the ghostly movements and mysterious shadows of the station. He soon encounters Lamps, a lamp-oil attendant of peculiar disposition and secretive talents, who offers refuge in his humble quarters as the Junction stirs reluctantly to life.
