In its latest cynical cash-grab masquerading as a nostalgia play, Disney has given us a live-action remake of "Mulan", minus Mushu, minus the songs, and quite possibly minus the fun, the soul and the heart of the animated original. We ponder the odd absence of any character arc for Mulan in this retelling of the 6th century story, ask whether this really is a tale of female empowerment and struggle to understand why critics loved this movie when audiences seemed to have responded with a collective "Meh".
