Proverbs 11:24-25
There is one who scatters, yet increases more; And there is one who withholds more than is right, But it leads to poverty. The generous soul will be made rich, And he who waters will also be watered himself.
Generosity positions you for increase.
Luke 6:38
Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be put into your bosom. For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you.”
God is always trying to give good things to us, but our hands are too full to receive them. -Augustine of Hippo
Withholding leads to a place of poverty.
He, who gives what he would as readily throw away, gives without generosity; for the essence of generosity is in self-sacrifice. -Jeremy Taylor, English bishop
Luke 21:1-4
And He looked up and saw the rich putting their gifts into the treasury, and He saw also a certain poor widow putting in two mites. So He said, “Truly I say to you that this poor widow has put in more than all; for all these out of their abundance have put in offerings for God, but she out of her poverty put in all the livelihood that she had.”
Generosity is not about the gift, it’s about our heart
What if we held everything in our life with an open hand?
Big Idea:
Once you clarify who the owner of all things is, it will clarify your attitude about generosity.
A lack of generosity refuses to acknowledge that your assets are not really yours, but God’s. -Tim Keller
Closing Thought:
You can choose to be generous….or you can choose to withhold, that is up to you….but you don’t get to choose the results.
