As the strike by SAMWU at the City of Tshwane continues over a wage increase, residents are battling to deal with a lack of services like refuse collection and other services rendered by the municipality. So in light of this, we thought to find out what is the recourse for affected residents on the ground under such situations. We’ve invited the office of the City of Johannesburg Ombudsman to educate us as residents over some of the cases they deal with. For instance, can the municipality bill you for a period like this where services were not rendered due to a strike? Are you justified in refusing to pay for the affected month? Also what is it that the office of the Ombudsman does and what kind of cases do they deal with? To educate us on this
