Muppet Christmas Carol (1992)

Listen Later

There are numerous screen versions of Charles Dickens' 1843 holiday fable 'A Christmas Carol', but to many millennials (Ryan included) the definitive take is the 1992 Brian Henson film. The first major Muppet project to be undertaken after the untimely death of Jim Henson, Muppet Christmas Carol stars Michael Caine as Ebenezer Scrooge with Kermit, Gonzo, Miss Piggy, and various other Muppets filling out the bulk of the supporting players.

Ryan is joined by his brother Sylvan as they deconstruct this perennial nostalgic favorite. They touch upon the various creative choices made by the filmmakers that distinguish this movie from other Christmas Carol adaptations (Gonzo's omniscient narration and Rizzo's counterpoints are given particular praise here). There's a detailed foray into the movie's costuming, which is far more historically accurate than it probably needed to be. Naturally, Caine's excellent performance gets a great deal of focus; Sylvan discusses how the film thoughtfully frames Scrooge's emotional arc in a way that's accessible to small children without condescending to them. Ryan insists on bringing up how Dickens comments on the philosophies of Thomas Malthus in the text and how this has colored the discourse among cryptofascists and American libertarians.

Of course, a discussion of the film's wonderful music takes up a good chunk of the conversation. Among other things, Ryan and Sylvan talk about the questionable choice of excising "When Love Is Gone" from the movie's theatrical release and why its presence in later editions is scattershot (this episode was recorded a day or two before Brian Henson announced that Disney recovered the negatives for this scene and will include them in the next restoration of the film).
