LaVena Johnson grew up in Florissant, Missouri and enlisted in the United States Army to earn money for college. While stationed as a Private First Class (PFC) in Balad, Iraq, LaVena, who was 19 years old, was found dead of a gunshot wound in a contractor’s tent on base.
The Department of Defense ruled LaVena’s death a suicide, despite subsequent investigations revealing evidence of rape, and numerous documented injuries inconsistent with suicide. LaVena’s father, Dr. John Johnson, a military veteran, became suspicious when he saw her body in the funeral home and decided to investigate. LaVena’s autopsy report revealed she had suffered a broken nose, black eye, loose teeth, burns from a corrosive chemical on her genitals, and a gunshot wound that was not usually associated with suicide. Bloody footprints were also discovered outside of her living quarters.
