PODCAST. Do you know what food is the only source of vitamin D in the produce aisle? Hi, I’m Dr. Susan Mitchell, registered dietitian nutritionist and I’m Breaking Down Nutrition with Your Digest for What Works, What Doesn’t. In fact, this food is as an exception to the rule as vitamin D is not naturally found in plant foods. It will surprise you.

The food which is the only source of vitamin D in the produce aisle? Mushrooms. They’re included with vegetables however are actually fungi. What sets mushrooms apart is that when they’re exposed to ultraviolet light, vitamin D is made. Mushrooms give you another popular food to help consume more vitamin D in your diet. Vitamin D is best known for keeping your bones and teeth healthy but it may help protect against some cancers and type 1 diabetes. But that’s not all.
