WE'RE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER - 3 THINGS CAN ALL DO
This is a paper originally composed for a presentation in 2016 expressing my point of view about certain aspects of our Craft at the time. My perspective, in general, has not been altered however the manner in which Freemasonry is conducted certainly has. In these current pandemic times, it seemed to me timely to revisit the thoughts that prompted the original presentation.
My purpose in this is to prompt some contemplation of how each of us can keep the Craft alive in these pandemic times. In the end we all want to accomplish the same thing through our involvement with the Craft – to create Freemasonry that is relevant to ourselves and contributes to improving our portion of the world.
My philosophy is to build on our strengths while not ignoring some of the trials we face in BC and Yukon - our jurisdiction has many strengths. However, like most social and fraternal organizations including most Grand Lodge jurisdictions around the world - we face a number of challenges.
A dedicated Freemason working in harmony with his brethren solves a lot of problems. To that end I suggest reviewing the Successful and Best Practices section on our Grand Lodge website at : https://freemasonry.bcy.ca/best_practices/index.html
The only real asset we have as is our brethren. Freemasonry exists in the hearts and minds of each brother. In the absence of face to face Lodge meetings it is imperative that we stay connected as best we can and encourage each other to actively keep the Craft in our daily life. In these times we are able to connect virtually through a variety of communication media that are thankfully available - including the Working Tools Podcasts.
The basis for any improvements in Freemasonry starts with each of us. Brethren engage in the Craft at a variety of levels with a range of commitment and a broad scope of motivation - successful Lodges bridge those gaps. In these times the support of our brethren in absentia is critical and needs to be carried out under the guidelines provided by our health authority. So, in that context the following questions are posed for your consideration entitled 3 Things to do "right now":
1. What are 3 things I need to do to become a better Freemason and support my brethren
2. What are 3 things my Lodge needs to do to be better able to support and retain members. Communicate your ideas to your Worshipful Master
3. What are 3 things Grand Lodge can do now to facilitate improvements to our Masonic experience. Communicate suggestions to the District Deputy.
