«نان، آموزش، آزادی!»

واژهٔ خونتا در اصل اسپانیایی به معنی شورای نظامی است و گاهی معادل دیکتاتوری نظامی به کار می‌رود. گئورگیوس پاپادوپولوس رئیس آن می‌گفت: «ما مقابل بیماری روی تخت جراحی هستیم؛ محدودیت‌ها تسمه‌هایی هستند که بیمار را روی تخت نگه می‌دارند تا عمل جراحی بی‌خطر انجام شود.»

The Athens Polytechnic Uprising

November 14–17, 1973 (23–26 Aban 1352)

A turning point that shook the Colonels' Junta regime and paved the way for the fall of the military dictatorship in 1974.

The central slogan of the students:

“Bread, Education, Freedom!”

The term “Junta” originally Spanish for military council, here used as synonym for military dictatorship.

Georgios Papadopoulos, the Junta leader, justified repression by saying:

“We are facing a sick patient on the operating table; the restrictions are the straps that hold the patient in place so the surgery can be performed safely.”
