Listen Later

Join us on a heartwarming journey as we dive into the inspiring story of Camp Kum-Ba-Yah, a beacon of inclusivity and friendship. In this episode, we had the pleasure of sitting down with Executive Director Amy and Programs Director Julie, who share the rich history and enduring values of this extraordinary camp.

Step back in time to 1961 when Camp Kum-Ba-Yah opened, founded by Bev Cosby, a visionary Caucasian pastor with a deep passion for social justice. Faced with the challenges of desegregation in Lynchburg, Virginia, Bev took a courageous step forward. When city pools remained closed to prevent integration, he opened the doors of Camp Kum-Ba-Yah to children of all backgrounds, becoming one of the first desegregated locations in the state.

Today, Camp Kum-Ba-Yah stands tall, upholding Bev's legacy of inclusivity, diversity, and access for every child. Amy and Julie revealed fascinating insights about the camp's activities and programs, highlighting the beloved Friendship Circle as a shining example. This powerful tradition, initiated by Bev himself, brings everyone together, joining hands and voices in harmonious unity—a cherished symbol of Camp Kum-Ba-Yah's core values.
