Join us on a captivating episode of "MyCamp" as we dive into the incredible world of Camp Highlands, where work seamlessly blends with play. In this enlightening conversation, we had the pleasure of chatting with Andy and Tracy Bachmann, the passionate owners and directors of Camp Highlands.
Founded in 1904, Camp Highlands emerged as a haven for boys seeking refuge from city life and a chance to immerse themselves in the wilderness. Andy, a third-generation member of the Highlands family, has an extensive history with the camp. From his days as a camper to becoming a counselor, Assistant Director, and now the Director alongside his wife, Tracy, Andy's deep connection to the camp is undeniable. Tracy, although not a camper herself, discovered the joy of camp when she and Andy were dating. Sneaking onto the campgrounds with her friends, she fell in love with the sense of community that camp brings. Tracy cherishes the feeling of being part of something larger than oneself. And let's not forget about the exceptional staff at Camp Highlands, with approximately 95% of them being former campers. In fact, their oldest counselor is a remarkable 83-year-old!
Camp Highlands prides itself on preserving its founding principles, with cabins devoid of electricity and running water. This intentional choice allows the boys to experience the authentic wilderness firsthand, embracing an unplugged lifestyle. Among the cherished traditions at camp, Tracy highlights the enchanting Sunday Night Sing.
