My Chemical Romance - The Black Parade

Listen Later

[SCOTT's PICK] When I was... a young boy... I listened... to lots of emo music... including the Black Parade. My Chemical Romance was the undisputed poster band for the emo scene. Their music's macabre themes were at the forefront, and their style (with their straightened black hair and deep black eyeliner) was extremely influential and widely replicated in the community. MCR ruled the summer of 2004, with their hugely popular Major label release "Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge." It was a different kind of success, largely fueled by the cable/MTV generation, as their music videos would get major play on Fuse TV or MTV2 even if the singles weren't on a lot of regular top 40 radio. They almost immediately had a cult following in the young emo crowd, and it wouldn't be exaggerating to say this was the most highly anticipated emo album up to that moment in emo music. And it was an extremely shocking change for the fans when they release their explosive new music video in September 2006 for "Welcome to the Black Parade," with a complete makeover (buzzed bleach blond hair and army uniforms) and a whole new energy. After years on the road and in the spotlight, they were really able to bring it all together for one very interesting cohesive story, where Gerard Way's theatrical nature really shines. The Black Parade is probably their magnum opus, but then again they're touring again now so maybe we'll get a chance for another emo epic... Joined today by former/current emo kids Brad LeBaron, Scott Westley, Jon Acker, and John Griffith.
