Propitiation = to appease

Pagan ideas of propitiation:

• Deity’s wrath was arbitrary and capricious
• Deity’s wrath similar to ours – based on unpredictable passions and personally vengeful
• Avert deity’s wrath through a bribe

4 Elements in Propitiation:

1. An offense, crime, or sin which incurs a penalty
2. An offended person whose anger needs to be appeased
3. An offending person who needs to be pardoned and accepted
4. A sacrifice of sufficient value to appease the offended person, resulting in pardon and acceptance of the offender, and a reconciliation of the two estranged parties

God put forward God to appease the wrath of God for sins against God.
