InkSpillers: Narrating Your Stories

My Mom Abandoned Me and Now Wants Everything Back

Listen Later

My mom signed away her parental rights and abandoned me as a baby, only to return when my dad became successful. Now, she and her new boyfriend are attempting to take everything.

Yesterday, I discovered my dad's treasured vinyl collection scattered and destroyed in the garage. His records, painstakingly collected over decades, were snapped and tossed aside like trash. My mom's boyfriend, Jason, claimed the space for his gym equipment, disregarding the collection's value, both financially and sentimentally, as one of my few connections to my dad since his passing six months ago. Overwhelmed, I confronted them, but my mom insists I'm overreacting and disrespecting her new relationship.

I'm Alex, 26 years old, and this incident is just another chapter in my tumultuous history with my mom. She got pregnant with me during her first year in college and saw the pregnancy as a hindrance. She relinquished her parental rights when I was just a few months old. My father, then 19, rose to the challenge, moving in with my grandparents, juggling two jobs while taking night classes, and never once complained about raising me on his own.
