π Devotional β Day 3: Defense β Building Walls That Protect Without Imprisoning
May 3
Nahum 1:7
Scripture:
βThe Lord is good, a refuge in times of trouble. He cares for those who trust in him.β
Devotional Reading:
There is a version of self-protection that imprisons the very person it was built to protect. It is the kind that developed in the aftermath of pain β the walls that went up so fast and so high after a betrayal, a loss, a disappointment that left you breathless. And for a season, those walls served a purpose. They kept you from falling further. They gave you time to catch your breath.
But walls were never meant to be permanent homes.
A defense is different from a wall. A Spirit-led defense is discerning. It knows what to let in and what to keep out. It is not built from the frantic energy of self-preservation β it is built from the quiet confidence of someone who knows their value and has decided to steward it wisely. It does not seal you off from life. It creates a boundary around the most sacred parts of you so that the right things can flourish inside of it.
God Himself is described as a refuge β a place of safety, of shelter, of protection. And the remarkable thing about God as refuge is that He is never a prison. You do not go to Him and come out smaller or more closed or more afraid. You go to Him and come out clearer. More whole. More capable of loving and being loved wisely.
That is the model for your defenses. Not walls that keep everyone out. But a refuge β a space that is safe enough for the right things to grow and strong enough to keep out what would destroy them.
Reflection Questions:
Where in your life have you built walls that may have become prisons? What would it look like to transform those walls into wise, Spirit-led defenses?
Prayer:
Lord, You are my refuge. Teach me to build defenses that look like You β strong enough to protect, wise enough to discern, and open enough to receive what You are sending. I do not want to live behind walls. I want to live in the safety of Your presence. Amen.
β±οΈ 3 Minutes to Sit and Listen to God:
Set your timer. Close your eyes and imagine yourself in a place of complete safety β held, covered, protected. Let the image settle. In that place of safety, ask God β what walls do You want me to release? What defenses do You want to build in me? Sit with whatever He brings. You do not have to respond. Just receive.
