Out of what I have read so far from the author, Mystic River is his finest book yet.
In 1975 Sean, Dave and Jimmy were all friends. A car stopped in the neighborhood and Dave got in when he got back, Dave Boyle was a different person. 25 years later, Sean is a Homicide Detective for the State Police, Jimmy is an ex-con and storeowner and Dave is a family man with a dark secret. THey are reunited by the murder Jimmy's daughter. It is a story about three boys who are twice tied together by a tragic event. I Am going to try not to give up too much about the book as i praise how amazing it is.I have not seen the movie. I saw a couple scenes but I'm so glad I didn't finish it. By the time you put this book down, you will be feeling sadness, sympathy and anger, but it won't be for the ones you think. YOu will feel betrayed, horrified, surprised. It will be an ending you will not see coming. Unlike the Kenzie & Gennaro series, Mystic River is a story told from the point of three boys, not men, but yes, boys. In a snese they were still like children in their own ways. Reading book is like reading a greek tragedy. There's a murder mystery, an insight to real and actualy human emotions and betrayal. I Reconmned this to anyone who has read anything by Dennis Lehane or hasn't. It is definatley an enjoyable book.
Sometimes Preachy
This is the ninth book by Dennis Lehane I have read. At first I didnât know âA Drink Before the Warâ was his first. Lehane was sometimes preachy about race relations, but a lot of authors use their writings to express their opinions and beliefs. I donât remember that in other novels of his I have read. The story itself is well written and the plot is intriguing.
Go back to the beginning of Lehane's writing career.....
This is Dennis Lehane's first novel and you see the promise he showed even back then (early 90s). Like many of his subsequent novels, Lehane sets this one is Boston and features protagonist private detective Patrick Kenzie and his partner, Angela Gennaro.
Boston politics (and the seedy side of politics, police work and street gangs) feature large in this mystery/thriller....Lehane eventually perfected this technique in Mystic River. Here, though, we see him begin to hone his craft with the flawed protagonists. Patrick Kenzie is tough but emotionally scarred (whether he admits it or not) from an abusive childhood. Angela is equally flawed and is one of the more interesting characters Lehane has ever written: a no-nonsense tough gal who, ironically, has remained in a physically abusive marriage for years.
Patrick and Angie find themselves running for their lives while simultaneously trying to do the morally right thing when a detective job they take leads them to massive corruption in state politics.
