The story takes place at some point in the past, in a floating forest.  The forest is a tropical paradise, similar to a rainforest.  The forest is speckled with lakes and ponds.   In the middle of the forest is a waterfall that is a passageway to earth. The forest is home to nature spirits (dryads) and water spirits (naiads). Each spirit embodies a certain plant or body of water, so whatever happens to their plant or body of water happens to them as well.  They can choose to be a part of their spirit or... be separate.
