Stories of Mythical Creature Sightings From Around.
Taniwha
The Guardian Of New Zealand. Boredom can cause us to do the strangest things. Some of us read; some of us get sucked into the black hole of endless google searches. A Google Earth photo off the coast of New Zealand has people scratching their heads. It showed a large wake in the water that seemed too big to be a shark and too fast to be a whale. Some believe it’s the taniwha of Maori legend. The taniwha are similar to dragons in their appearance but are guardian spirits. Experts claim this photo is likely of a small speed boat like a catamaran moving quickly through the water. So maybe it wasn’t the taniwha in the waters. Maybe it was just a speed boat. Or maybe it really was the taniwha guarding the waters of New Zealand. We’ll never know.
The Alabama Leprechaun
Children’s books are filled with imaginative creatures. We are even used to seeing them in movies and television shows, but how about the news? A local news station in Mobile, Alabama reported on a leprechaun sighting in the community. A crowd of residents went out to talk to the news team explaining that they saw a leprechaun in a tree by the road. They claimed if you shined a light on the tree, the leprechaun would disappear. A crude sketch of the leprechaun was even drawn up based on eyewitness accounts. Some wonder if the news report was the residents playing a prank or if the news video package was exploiting racial prejudices and stereotypes of the residents. Either way, the mythical creature had its 15 minutes of fame with or without its pot of gold.
The Djinn

Think these are just fictional beings that belong in stories? Well, to their culture, djinns are very much real even in the modern-day world. A 2014 divorce case in the United Arab Emirates won in court the right to divorce his wife because of his claim that she was possessed by a djinn. The story of the djinn’s possession came about when the wife consistently rejected her husband every night. Then the family chimed in that they had already tried to exorcise the girl with no success. The court seemed to find this explanation satisfactory and granted the divorce.
Aswangs
Family Feud. Sitting around telling scary stories or watching a horror film can get your paranoid later. Who can fall a sleep after that? Well, Filipino folklore has some residents so paranoid they decided to take things into their own hands.
