It's a popular prayer practice, but is "Name it and claim it" and "Decree it and declare it" biblical? It's attributed to
E.W. Kenyon who studied Mind Science and Metaphysical New Thought under mentalist and folk healer, Phineas Quimbey. Described by terms like:
• Name it and claim it
• Positive Confession
• Speaking things into existence
• Creating your own reality
It shifts the focus from God to us and uses verses like Matthew 17:19-21, MARK 11:20-24, John 14:13, John 15:16, John 16:23-24.
But those verses need to be examined in light of context as well as other Scriptures and well-established biblical principals.
Praying in Jesus' name is not like a magic tagline we add to the end of a prayer. It's based on His authority, His sacrifice and according to His will.
OUR CONFIDENCE IN PRAYER IS WHEN WE PRAY ACCORDING TO HIS WILL.
1 John 5:14-15, “14 And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us. 15 And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests that we have asked of him.”
OUR PURPOSE IN PRAYER IS WHEN WE PRAY THAT THE FATHER WOULD BE GLORIFIED IN THE SON.
John 14:13-14, “13 And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If you ask anything in My name, I will do it.”
OUR CONDITION TO PRAYER IS THAT WE ABIDE IN CHRIST AND THAT HIS WORD ABIDES IN US.
John 15:7, “If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you.”
THE HINDERANCE TO PRAYER IS WHEN WE ASK FOR THINGS SELFISHLY.
Luke 22:42, “Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done.”
So, while NAME IT & CLAIM IT is popular, it’s not biblical and can cause a lot of harm to the faith of young believers or even well-seasoned believers who are desperate for God to show up in a specific way.
If we pray like that, we end up on this roller-coaster ride of emotion-based, results-oriented faith which, in reality, isn’t faith at all. True faith-based prayer is"
1. Focused on God
2. Submitted to God’s will
3. For God’s glory.
4. Acknowledgement of our dependency upon God and our trust in Him for the outcome.
“God’s will is exactly what we’d choose if we knew all the facts.”
