Like Mental Illness, CHRONIC PAIN can be a disease that takes control of your life where it leaves you feeling helpless, depressed, physically and mentally exhausted. This week's guest NAOMI McCALLUM so elegantly talks us through her life leading up too and through Chronic pain and depression.
Naomi’s first exposure to depression was when she was 13yrs old when her Aunty said “ you now have to look after your Mum '' because she didn’t have the strength to do it herself; describing this experience as one of the most life altering moments she's experienced. It gives you an insight into what life from there was like for Naomi, as she had stress after stress, injury after injury, illness after illness until it became all too consuming and her body began to break down.
Chronic pain is one of the world's silent killers and statistics indicate that 30-40% of people that are diagnosed with mental illness are also presenting for chronic pain, yet there isn’t much if any social exposure to this incredibly scary phenomenon. This stat makes practical sense due to the mind's inability to differentiate physical pain and emotional pain at any time in our life.
Naomi has channelled her trauma into action, changing her neural pathways as she strives to give people the opportunity to experience life. Through her efforts with mental health work, personal coaching and rehabilitation, disability work and her future studies as a Physiotherapist she is beyond thrilled to say she is on the other side of her struggles because of the WORK she has put into herself.
