Beth and Michelle step into the strange stillness of Napoleon Dynamite, a coming-of-age comedy where almost nothing happens and yet nearly everyone changes. Deb, Summer, Grandma, and LaFawnduh possess their own ambitions and agency, and LaFawnduh proves essential to the ending by giving Napoleon the music that makes his dance possible. The film may be filled with silence, awkward pauses, and tater tots, but beneath all that negative space is a surprisingly sweet story about friendship and finding just enough courage to show up.
