På norra halvklotet står en fjärdedel av marken på permafrost; jordlager som är fruset året om. Där döljs årtusenden av jordens historia i form av miljontals ton organiskt material, kvarlevor från förhistoriska djur och växter, som när det tinar omvandlas till växthusgaser som accelererar den globala uppvärmningen. Den här processen pågår just nu - och det går snabbare än någonsin.
