Publisher's Summary:
At 75, Terry and Monica Darlington had done everything they could think of doing, including starting a business and becoming athletes and running a literary society. Lately they had become boating adventurers and Terry, a best-selling writer. But in their Midlands canal town in November, life was looking dull and short on surprises. Then their famous canal boat was destroyed by fire. Within a few days they had bought a new one and soon headed north in the Phyllis May 2 - to Liverpool, Lancaster, the Pennines, and Wigan Pier.
Terry recorded the journey, and alongside it the story of his life and his marriage and his dog Jim, with his broken ear like a flat cap, and Monicas dog Jess, known with heart-breaking reason as the Flying Catastrophe. Funny, affecting and beautifully told, this is a story that brims with incident and excitement, and is full of the famous and fascinating people the Darlingtons have met. And there is sadness too of course - it is the true story of an adventurous life well lived.
Members Reviews:
This trilogy is a great read
My mother bought me Narrow Dog to Carcassonne when we hired a boat on the Canal du Midi. I read it when we got home, and got much more out of it, I think, than I would have had I read it before the holiday - I understood far more about the difficulties, dangers and joys of canal boating. Like Terry, I was somewhat disturbed that people get so little instruction before being allowed out on their own with such a massive vessel! For the first few pages I thought the writing style was...er...quirky - but I was quickly pulled in and thereafter loved it and couldn't put it down. As soon as I'd finished that book I bought the other two, and enjoyed them just as much. Thoroughly recommend all three books, and will keep hoping for another!
Two Stars
Kept my interest but jumped all over the place.
Terry does it again!
I loved Terry Darlington's earlier two "Narrow Dog" books, and Narrow Dog to Wigan Pier is just as enjoyable. Not only does he narrate another canal adventure in his inimitable way, he also tells some of his personal past. I'm always curious about an author whose books I love, so was glad that he satisfied my wonderings. I just love his sense of humor and I'm sure I'll re-read this and the other "Narrow Dog" books again and again in the years to come.
FINALLY!
Finally, the 3rd "Narrow Dog" book has arrived! I came across the first book in an airport when I was looking for something to read to pass the time while waiting for my delayed flight. Fell in love with the story, the way it is written, and the very British sense of humor. The second book - same thing. When I read there was a third one, I was eager to get it. It has been a couple of years, but it is finally available in the U.S. Worth the wait! Hope Mr. Darlington has many more adventures and books in his future!

Service was fine but I was disappointed with the quality of the book. It was a heavily weathered paperback. Extremely affordable so I won't complain too much.
