Episode Description: Christianity reached China as early as 635 A.D. when Nestorian missionary Alopen arrived in Chang'an (Xi'an) during the Tang Dynasty. For 150 years Christianity flourished until 9th century persecution. The Xi'an Stele (erected 781 A.D., discovered 1625) proves this forgotten chapter—a 10-foot stone monument documenting Christian history, calling it "the Religion from Daqin" (the West). After 19th century Protestant missions, Communists took power in 1949 expelling missionaries, imprisoning leaders, burning Bibles. The Cultural Revolution (1966-1976) aimed to eliminate Christianity entirely. In 1976 the government declared success. But when China reopened in the 1980s, the world discovered the church had exploded from 1 million to tens of millions—now estimated at 60-130 million believers. How? Persecution purifies the church (Acts 8:1-4); the Holy Spirit builds it, not institutions (Matthew 16:18); martyrs' blood is the seed.
