Publisher's Summary:
Michael Stuyvesant was dying. A wealthy, courteous, and controlled man, all he wanted was to get to Denver to visit his children for one last Christmas. But sometimes even money, good manners, and a compulsive desire for order are not enough. God, the weather, a gigantic shopping-mall Santa Claus, and a pregnant girl who called herself Cheyenne - "like the city. And a river, too. And a mountain and an Indian tribe. I looked it up" - had other plans for him. "'Michael! Michael, oh my God, Michael! What did you do?' he heard in a shriek behind him as he picked up the fallen weapon. He turned to see Cheyennes head poking sideways out the open drivers-side door. Her elfin face, he thought distractedly - the triangular, fox-like face of an elf who thought he had just killed Santa Claus. And what else would she think? Michael Stuyvesant, a man who prided himself on the calm order of his life, stood with a tire iron in his hand, straddling the body of a titanic Kris Kringle while the fat snowflakes drifted down around him and the chiming, clicking noises of an expensive SUV merged with the screams of a pregnant teenager. 'Oh, shut up,' he said."
The second of Kindle Singles author Joseph Bottums trilogy of Christmas short stories - modern takes on the Gifts of the Magi - the 13,000-word "Nativity" follows 2012s "Wise Guy". And where "Wise Guy" asked what Balthasar, the Wise Man who brought myrrh to Bethlehem, would be like as a clever thief, "Nativity" now re-imagines Melchior, the Wise Man who brought gold, as a wealthy cancer patient adrift in the American Midwest.
Members Reviews:
enjoyable engaging read
I really enjoyed this as I do most of what Jody Bottum writes. This was a little different than his usual.
It was a nice read with fully fleshed out charactors and I enjoyed it. I liked the direction the plot took, resistence to doing the right thing then following through to the end. Think about it for next Christmas.
Joseph Bottum Reviving Art of the Short Story
I am a friend of Joseph Bottum, full disclosure. Still, if I didn't like Nativity, I would just have not written a review.
Bottum's story demonstrates that the good one is given to do in life often comes at unexpected times and in unlikely places. It is never too late to do good.
One of the best short stories I have read in some time
This was my introduction to Joseph Bottum and I was deeply moved by this story. The story is interesting, the characters seem real and the ending was very touching. One of the best short stories I have read in some time.
Another Hit
Bottum once again tells a Christmas tale for the ages. Last year our family read Wise Guy, much to our delight. This year it will be Nativity. No need to ask what 2014's selection will be.
Quite a modern twist to the average holiday tail.
I loved it! It was funny, tragic, and yet still had a happy ending. It was a create holiday read.
