Publisher's Summary:
Steeped in the faith tradition of the American Transcendentalists (the majority of whom, like Emerson, were Unitarian ministers), the author's own spiritual life was likewise grounded and guided by nature. So of course she said yes to a career in interim ministry that would require her to relocate every summer. What would each new landscape, from Nevada to Vermont to Colorado to Arizona to South Carolina to Maine, have to teach her spirit? After all, there was more to learn from nature than could be found in New England, wasn't there?

A Great Book for Personal Reflection or Guided Reflections in a Group
As an interim minister myself, one who has moved often from one end of the country to the other, I was intrigued to see how this author would link her own itinerant ministry with a sense of place in one place after another. She did it beautifully. In each chapter, she gave me vivid pictures of both landscape and culture. Better yet, she showed how landscape -- the nature of a place -- helps to create the nature of the people there as well as how the people leave their mark on the place. It is this intricate system of causes and effects that intrigued me throughout the book. But there was still more for me in the author's sensitivity to showing what it is really like to uproot oneself and then inevitably put down new roots somewhere else, and then equally inevitably uproot yet again. One has to be at home in oneself to do it. What this minister-as-author shows is that being at home in the nature of the place where you are enables you to be at home in yourself no matter where you are and thus able to minister to a new congregation of people in a new place, time after time. All these intricacies in the book work so well and come across so meaningfully to a reader because Gail Collins-Ranadive is herself a fine writer, one who creates images that a reader can really see and who weaves idea with image so that a reader can really understand. I could easily see using this book as guide for a group meeting multiple times for reflection. In fact, at the back of the book I found suggestions for reflection based on each chapter.
