After unexpectedly losing her husband, Kim Hamer must rely on her unwavering faith and determined resilience to help her children confront their grief, lean on their community and rebuild their lives.
"I learned that for me, grief in the second year was way challenging. In the first year, I was always focused on getting past the first. I had the notion that at some point I would count the day and I wouldn't burst out in tears that he was gone. That's really what I mean by resilience - having the faith, the idea, the notion that at some point you're going to be at a better place. You just don't know when, and you don't
Kim Hamer is an HR consultant and sought-after public speaker who launched 100 Acts of Love, a consultancy that provides tools to help leaders increase team productivity, trust, and engagement when cancer affects a team member. She is also the author of 100 Acts of Love, a Girlfriend's Guide to Loving Your Friend Through Cancer or Loss.
Kim Hamer experienced the tragic loss of her husband at the young age of 44. She was grateful to have been able to watch him take his last breath, but soon realized that most people don't know what to say or do in the face of death, so they back away. Kim learned that it was only through the support of her community that she was able to keep taking the small steps of resilience and faith needed to get through the days. She also taught her children to be resilient by showing them her own grief and enrolling them in support groups. Kim now hopes to spread her understanding that in times of tragedy, it is important to be witnessed and that even small gestures of love can make a difference.
In this episode, you will learn the following:
1. How to be resilient in times of grief and loss
2. The reality of grief beyond the three-month mark
