This old commandment - to love one another - is the same message you heard before. Yet it is also new. Jesus lived the truth of this commandment , and you also are living it. For the darkness is disappearing, and the true light is already shining.” 1 John 2:7-8

John’s epistles, 1, 2, and 3 John, are a beautiful extension from John’s Gospel. John continues his central themes of abiding and living out the call to love one another while spending considerable time on a new theme: confidence in salvation. John talks a lot about sin, about false teachers, about issues of the heart - but he does all of this under the cloak of what it means to be a child of God, to be in fellowship with Jesus, and to love one another. To help us navigate John’s letters is Dr. Gary Derickson, recently retired Professor Emeritus at Corban University and author of a commentary on John’s letters.
