But as The Economist warns, “the bottom has fallen out of the job market.” Hard-working youths, once assured that “the path to a nice life was clear,” now face fierce competition, shrinking entry-level salaries and ever-mounting student-loan burdens.
Employers are slashing graduate schemes, leaning instead on cheaper contract labor and automated hiring tools. Meanwhile, sky-high housing costs mean a degree no longer guarantees a foothold in the middle class. As one recruit put it, a diploma today “feels more like a ticket to precarious work than a passport to prosperity.”
So what can graduates do? The old playbook is gone. Building in-demand skills, embracing lifelong learning and exploring nontraditional career paths are no longer optional—they’re essential. Today’s graduates must adapt fast or risk being left behind in a world where a degree alone just isn’t enough.
