Understanding and Accessing the NDIS in Australia

What is the NDIS?

The NDIS, or National Disability Insurance Scheme, is a government-funded program in Australia that supports individuals with disabilities. It aims to empower them to achieve their goals, increase their independence, and participate fully in their communities.

How do I access the NDIS?

To access NDIS supports, you need to meet certain eligibility criteria. This generally includes having a permanent disability that significantly impacts your ability to participate in everyday activities or requires ongoing support.

What happens after I become eligible for the NDIS?

Once deemed eligible, you will work with an NDIS planner to develop a personalized plan. This plan outlines your goals, aspirations, and the specific supports you need to achieve them. The NDIS planning process is designed to put you at the center of decision-making.

What kind of supports can I access through the NDIS?

Your NDIS plan can provide funding for a wide range of supports and services tailored to your specific needs. These supports can cover areas such as daily living, employment, education, social participation, and more.

Can I choose my own service providers under the NDIS?

Yes, as an NDIS participant, you have the choice and control to select the service providers that best meet your needs and align with your goals.

How can The Y support me through the NDIS?

The Y offers various services to support individuals and families under the NDIS. These services include support coordination to help you understand your plan and connect with service providers, home and community supports for daily living and skill development, inclusive respite camps, and personalized programs tailored to your specific goals and interests.

What is NDIS respite and how does it work?

The NDIS provides funding for respite, known as ‘Short-Term Accommodation and Assistance’ under the Core Support category. NDIS funding allows for up to 28 days of Short-Term Accommodation (STA) per year, which can be used flexibly throughout the year, including for emergency respite care. The amount of STA funding you receive depends on the level of support you require.

Why should I choose The Y as my NDIS service provider?

The Y has years of experience in the disability sector and offers a person-centered approach, putting your goals and preferences first. They have qualified and caring staff dedicated to making a positive impact, and they offer flexibility and choice in the services they provide. They aim to simplify your NDIS journey and help you access the supports you need.
