1972 was a year filled with massive global shifts. In the UK, it was marked by the tragic Bloody Sunday massacre and the signing of the treaty to join the Common Market (the precursor to the EU). Meanwhile, in the US, President Nixon opened doors to China, signed an arms control treaty with Russia, and began bringing troops home from Vietnam—all while the shadows of the Watergate scandal started to loom. Against this backdrop of political fury and fire, the music world was boldly unfolding into the future with glam rock, progressive epics, and newly independent soul legends.
