We review a few types of needless suffering by patients and families with discussion of the causes and potential interventions. Having information and acknowledging patient concerns, addressing fears and worries can help reduce suffering. Easing symptoms with ongoing follow up and adjustments to the treatment plan over time builds trust and provides reassurance. Patients that have the suffering eased feel that their concerns are validated and they are respected by their physician and team. As these are discussed, other causes may come to mind in addition to these. Please let us know what we missed and the methods your family used to end needless suffering.
