Nehemiah recognised that there was an internal desire that God had planted in him to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem. He also had the opportunity to ask the king for resource to do so. The king granted it but the people were unhappy that an Israelite was initiating this work. But he managed to persuade the people to join in with him and they all became builders!
The enemy’s main strategy to prevent this from happening was distraction and discouragement. He wanted to neutralise the work and get Nehemiah out of the battle – and he does the same to us today. That’s why we’re encouraged ‘do not turn to the right or the left’, and to ‘set our faces like flint’, to ‘not grow weary in well doing’, to ‘withstand the evil day’, to ‘run the race with endurance’, and to ‘be steadfast and immovable, to fight the good fight…’
