In Nehemiah 8, thousands of people gathered together, heard God's Word read aloud for hours, wept over their sin, and then walked away filled with overwhelming joy. That journey from hearing to understanding to rejoicing is just as relevant today as it was thousands of years ago. God's Word is living and active, and when we truly engage with it, it exposes the gap between who we are and who God calls us to be. But that conviction is not the end of the story. Nehemiah reminded the grieving crowd to zoom out and see the faithfulness of God in their lives, and their mourning turned to celebration. The joy of the Lord is not a feeling we manufacture on our own. It is a gift that flows from understanding who God is, what He has done, and trusting that He remains faithful today. The gospel reminds us that while the law reveals our sin, Jesus Christ is our Savior, and that truth is the foundation of a joy no circumstance can take away.
