Nepal's cooperative sector, known as "Sahakari", is a significant and historically entrenched part of the country's socio-economic landscape. The cooperative movement in Nepal has a long history, formally beginning in the 1950s, and was initially focused on meeting the needs of the rural population in the agricultural sector. Agricultural cooperatives are still the most widespread and influential segment, providing their members with access to vital resources such as credit, seeds, fertilizers, and promoting the adoption of modern agricultural methods. The scale of Sahakari's activities is impressive: cooperatives are present in almost all of the country's 753 local governments, with the exception of a few of the most remote and inaccessible mountain areas, indicating their deep penetration into the economic fabric of Nepal, especially in rural areas.
