Publisher's Summary:
This absorbing mystery opens in 1945 as a German commander aboard a sinking submarine bitterly ponders his failed secret mission. Flash forward to contemporary Cape Cod, Mass., where Aristotle "Soc" Socarides, a commercial fisherman who in the off-season becomes a quintessentially broke, wisecracking P.I., is hired by wealthy and sinister Frederick Walther, whose daughter Leslie has disappeared. Soc seeks a lead on Leslie at the marine laboratory where she once worked, but her caustic, womanizing ex-boss and lover, Tom Drake, is murdered before Soc has a chance to question him. Emphasis shifts to Drake's research with remote-controlled undersea vehicles capable of investigating phenomena out of the reach of human divers. Death-defying watery escapades ensue as Soc, Drake's enemies, Walther, and the FBI close in on the mysterious sub of the Prologue, wrecked off the Massachusetts coast.
Soc, introduced in Kemprecos's The Cool Blue Tomb, is an appealing, witty protagonist; high-tech gadgets are explained clearly so as not to alienate the reader; and the Cape Cod locale is rendered with panache in this fast-paced, enjoyable yarn.
Members Reviews:
great read if you are a diver, like mysteries or want to imagine being a scuba diver.
I read the first book in this series and it was bumpy, interesting, but not entirely smooth. This book is written much better. It reminds me of a Tom Selleck/Jesse Stone movie. Cape cod is as much a character in the books as the people.
The best part of both books is that the author is intelligent and explains things like modern weapons, diving, history and mythology as part of the story. I loved reading this book because it was like taking a vacation with a well informed, interesting friend.
The Main Character is a hard drinking ex cop from Boston who now lives in a boat house on cape cod. He is a fisherman who moonlights as a private detective, he is like the PIs of old except that he is a kind man to his Greek family, knows literature, and respects women. What's not to like?
The author says that this series never made it out of the middle of the sales heap. I think that it should have been at the top, where his next series ended up.
I am happy that I have found a new author and even more happy to have found an author to share with the males in my family!
EDITOR NEEDED
I was going to rate this book 3 stars, but cannot. I did like this book better than the first in the series. The characters are more developed. The descriptive passages don't seem as overbearing as in the first book (or I am getting used to it.) What I cannot let go is the numerous grammatical errors. What I cannot get over is the even more numerous spelling errors. Some of these spelling errors would not be caught by spell checkers because they are "words" - just wrong ones, e.g., stature vs. statue. This is why an editor is needed. The other reason an editor is need is to tighten up some of the writing and cut out have the descriptive "pages" in the book. I guess when there is no plot, add 100's of adjectives and describe everything in painful detail. As I sit here, carpal tunnel lurks beneath the polyester and cotton of the St. John's Bay plaid shirt purchased at J.C. Penney's years ago. The chair beneath my posterior supports all 420 pounds of me and groans as I move.
