  • The Lost Files, E1: "America‘s Cooked"
    This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit nersey.substack.com

    This episode is old as hell so we decided to invent a series called “The Lost Files” so it seems like we waited to put it out on purpose and weren’t just too lazy to edit it. Anyways even though we recorded this thing at the beginning of June we talked about a bunch of stuff that ended up happening because Slava’s on steroids now and they’ve made us all…

  • E30: The Sentences We Say in 2024 [feat. Donwill]

    First things first: Donwill is a rapper both as a solo artist and one half of Tanya Morgan, and also a producer/comedy guy/DJ/the host of the Webby Award-winning Almanac of Rap podcast, whose third season is dropping August 1 courtesy of Okayplayer. He is also, unbelievably, the latest guest on the Nersey podcast, AND THE FIRST PERSON EVER TO FREESTYLE ON THE POD LIVE IN STEEL TIPPED DOVE’S STUDIO.

    In this episode, we talk about the following things: will.i.am making an AI, doing man-on-the-street interviews, the legacy of the Okayplayer message boards, the time he got kicked off a couch so Kanye could sit on it, the marriage of convenience between certain corners of hip-hop and the Republican establishment, and, obviously, how the game still needs Lil Mama.

    Stay tuned for the end of the show (or fast forward to the end, whatever) to find Donwill kicking a pair of freestyles to Cam’ron’s “Get ‘em Daddy” and 100 gecs’ “Money Machine,” both of are absolutely perfect and the ultimate manifestation of the five mics mentality which is a thing I just made up.

    TIME TO PLUG DONWILL’S VARIOUS PROJECTS: The new season of Almanac of Rap drops on August 1; that night he’s also DJing at Elsewhere with Hannibal Burress. Listen to his East Village Radio show, Too Much Rap, Wednesdays at 10am on eastvillageradio.com. Tanya Morgan is dropping a new album on August 26 and it will be good. He does other things too so follow him on Twitter and Instagram to find out more.

  • E29: Brain Rot 101 [feat. Kieran Press-Reynolds]

    How do you do, fellow kids? This week's episode finds Certified Internet Genious Kieran Press-Reynolds coming into the auditory octagon for some FULL-CONTACT BRAIN ROT EXPLAINATIONS AND/OR COMBAT. Yes, my fellow youths, we're talking about mewing and mogging and jelqing and looksmaxing, which is different from girthmaxing which is not a thing you do in preparation for Chilean Sex Trance because that has more to do with trashwave than it does edging, gooning, things of that nature, etc. (Yes I know what all of those words mean, and no I am not going to tell you.)For real though we spend a lot of the episode talking about memes and microgenres and super crazy internet stuff from Kieran's generation and ours, plus how Kieran used to be a high-level memelord and was almost cast on Survivor. GT’s. BTW read Kieran’s piece on brain rot stuff here.

    we’re gonna do a paid bonus episode next time, tap in.

    This week on the pod we’ve got Alphonse Pierre, who in addition to being the proprietor of an excellent substack called The Leaks, writes over at Pitchfork and is widely agreed to be the foremost expert on contemporary rap music in all the land. Topics discussed include teenage Alphonse taking the Staten Island Ferry into the city to go to St. Marks Place, the influence of Pressa on Canadian rap, and whether Ian could impress Alphonse by dropping a Broken Arrow reference. This is also kind of a Remember Some Guys episode, in that we spend a lot of it Remembering Guys who were and maybe still are rappers.

  • E27: Music Is Back [feat. Meaghan Garvey]

    Greetings, fellow culture enthusiasts. Today on the pod we’re joined by Meaghan Garvey, who is the proprietor of SCARY COOL SAD GOODBYE, America’s premiere vibes-based newsletter, and also our friend. We talk about Meaghan’s “viral review” of Charli XCX’s BRAT for Pitchfork, how Salem is secretly the most influential band, what the vibe this summer is going to be, Meaghan’s theory of “Midwest Supremacy,” and many other fine topics that I’m not going to tell you about because I’ve got other stuff to do.

    Nersey is hosted by Trey Smith, Slava P, and Drew Millard; our producer is Steel Tipped Dove and our music is by Craig S. Jenkins. We were gonna make the last bit of the episode paywalled but had to cut it due to “technical difficulties.” If we had actually managed to squeeze that thing out then you would have had to pay to hear some extra stuff, so with that in mind, please consider becoming a paid subscriber on our Substack.

  • Heel Turn to Hater (feat. Bauce Sauce) - The Nersey Guide to Ethical Hating E7

    this episode is part of the nersey guide to ethical hating, a series featuring some of your favorite people on the internet talking about the concept of “the hater” through the lens of their personal expertise. find each episode here once it’s up. sign up on patreon or substack.

    - - -

    On today’s edition of the Nersey Guide to Ethical Hating, we’re joined by Bauce Sauce, a veritable internet legend who, no b******t, has:

    * Been a pro wrestler

    * Played basketball in college

    * Gotten to level 50 on Pokémon Go

    * Fathered two children

    * Hunted a Lizard-Man and wrote an article about it titled “Reptile Dysfunction”

    * Hosted videos for Complex

    * Interviewed Gudda Gudda, who is his favorite rapper

    * Successfully rhymed the word “orange” in a rap song

    He is, by and large, also the happiest person we’ve ever met. So, we decided to have him on and convince him to be more of a hater. It kind of worked I guess? Mainly we just got to bask in Bauce’s hyper-posi aura and watch in awe as he cut an insane wrestling promo in which he threatened to beat Slava in a game of one-on-one basketball. Other topics include being online in your thirties, trying to convince his daughter not to clout-farm, and whether you should respond to a stranger’s unprovoked aggression with a comic amount of aggression.

    Good episode, long episode, listen to it the night before they pick up the recycling and you’re gonna have to spend an hour and a half crushing cans.

  • E25: The Rap Beef Apocalypse

    Nersey is a podcast by Trey Smith, Drew Millard, and Slava P. We are produced by Steel Tipped Dove and our music is by Craig S. Jenkins. Our show is technically about music. We publish new episodes most weeks, plus blog posts sometimes. Paid subscribers get access to bonus episodes and bonus segments including our legendary “Joe Budden Podcast-Style Sleepers Section.” Sign up for a paid subscription on Substack or Patreon.

    ---

    Every geriatric Millennial rapper is beefing right now, and as geriatric Millennial music podcasters, this is our time to shine. So obviously, we “seized the moment” by recording a super chaotic episode about all of this and then failed to put it out until now, when Kendrick Lamar has released another diss song that has added to “the beef discourse.” So just imagine there’s an extra ten minutes at the end of this podcast where we yell about “Euphoria” or something idk.

  • How to Hate Evil [Feat. Luke O'Neil] - The Nersey Guide to Ethical Hating E6

    this episode is part of the nersey guide to ethical hating, a series featuring some of your favorite people on the internet talking about the concept of “the hater” through the lens of their personal expertise. only paying subscribers will have access to the entire series, so sign up on patreon or substack.

    / / /

    Today on The Nersey Guide to Ethical Hating, we’ve got Luke O’Neil, the legendary proprietor of the Welcome to Hell World newsletter, on the pod. We recorded this a few months ago, and we’ve been waiting for the exact right time to drop it. A lot of the episode deals with the ongoing genocide in Gaza, which has only become more dire on the ground — and contentious in America — in the time since we had Luke on. But Luke is one of the most passionate and astute observers of politics around, and he helps us navigate the situation with the appropriate amount of righteous rage — directed at both the fact that such atrocities are happening to innocent people, as well as at the complete and utter intellectual dishonesty of the politicians who enable this to happen. Listen to this episode and then go protest somewhere.

    FYI, this episode is mostly serious (probably not surprising given the subject matter), but we also discuss sports haterdom, a big pile of snow in Boston that was definitely a hater, and also Luke’s most recent book, A Creature Wanting Form, which you can buy from OR Books.

  • E24: Does J. Cole Suck Ass? A Nersey Debate

    trey took the week off, so drew and slava decided to record a formal, timed debate on a topic thats been pondered since time immemorial: does j cole suck, or does j cole not suck. slava got to take the position of “j cole obviously sucks cmon dude,” while drew was forced to defend j cole because he is from north carolina and j cole is too. our producer steel tipped dove played the role of moderator.

    WHO WILL WIN THIS HEATED BATTLE IN THE TIMELESS ART OF DEBATE???? will it be slava, who had the advantage of taking the position that most people who listen to this podcast probably agree with? or will it be drew, who loves being a contrarian and is in no way above baiting slava into breaking the rules of the debate? there is only one way to know, and that is by listening to this episode of nersey.
