Today’s conversation is deeply needed, long overdue, and close to my heart. We are talking about neurodiversity in Black and Brown children—and how systems that were never designed with our children in mind have misnamed, misunderstood, and mishandled their brilliance.
We’re going to explore terms that may be new for some people—like neurodivergent, ADHD, autism, highly sensitive, and highly intuitive—not as diagnoses to fear, but as languages to understand our children in a deeper way.
So many of our children have been labeled too early, punished too often, or ignored altogether. They are seen as behavioral problems, learning problems, or discipline problems—when in truth, they are carrying different nervous systems, different learning styles, and different ways of perceiving the world.
I believe we are witnessing a generation of children who are not broken—but neurobrilliant. Children who are wired differently because they are meant to build something different. And if we are going to love them fully, we must also build schools, systems, and spaces that honor who they actually are.
Today, I’m honored to be joined by someone doing exactly that work in the world.
Our guest is Kira A. Betford, founder of Neurocatalyst Academy, a micro-school designed specifically for Black and Brown neurodivergent children. She is an educator, advocate, visionary, and re-builder of learning spaces that center safety, dignity, creativity, and cultural belonging.
Thank you for tuning in. Let's continue the conversation online.
